Dansefestival for 3000 drepne

Crowd Atmosphere at the Roskilde Festival 2009

Review of the Peter Doherty Concert

How can one define the concept of ‘crowd atmosphere’? What makes an event memorable, and how does atmosphere build up and change from one situation to another? ‘Atmosphere’ can be defined as a mood created by an event or as a disposition of a particular time. A group of people is gathered around their object of desire – their idol or hero, and at a festival these objects of passion are many, changing (the same) persons’ behavior from Devil worshipping, candle lighting, hip hopping, head banging or flag waving.

What is interesting about a music festival is how the moods and atmosphere of a crowd is build up, depending on the object adored in the moment. Atmosphere it is often – in psychology – put to use as a persons temperament, but what happens in a larger crowd with a number of persons involved? A music performance can fulfill or disappoint one’s expectations. But a crowd’s moods also bear witness of the fact that one can be taken - or thrown - by the moment. Mixed up with expectations that intensify the moment, the Peter Doherty concert at the Roskilde festival 2009 is a good example of how crowd atmosphere is co-creating an event into a great musical experience.

Roskilde - the Film

The Party Perspective

Review: Roskilde (2008), a Documentary film, Barok Film, Director Ulrik Wivel

The documentary film Roskilde has a few music scenes. The film dwells on the absolute extraordinary concerts (for instance The Streets, Franz Ferdinand, Mew, Sonic Youth) performed at the Roskilde Festival within the last decade. But should a documentary on the Roskilde Festival be about music? Festival research shows that not all guests buy their ticket in order to attend concerts. In many ways a festival is also viewed as an extended life style event where the music works as atmosphere smoothing the socialising and partying. (more…)

Coming to Kristiansand: a diary of a young foreign professional

19. June, 2009

What is it like to live and work in Kristiansand as a young professional? Is it easy to integrate? Does this town meet the expectations? Would you like to stay here? Why? Why not?

We, Egle and Will, are two students from Warwick University (UK), who came to Kristiansand for six weeks in the beginning of May in order to look for answers to these questions. Trying to experience to the fullest what Kristiansand has to offer and reflect upon it has been part of our internship at Agderforskining.

This ethnographic research is a contribution to Agderforskning’s wider project Professionalization of the creative industries in Kristiansand. Companies here know very little about their high competence employees and what they do after work - in their free time. The research project is looking into how the region can develop, using the creative industries, into a place where you can feel at home even if you were not born here.

FESTIVALS: Norway

Norwegian festivals have gone through immense and swift changes over the last decade, thus research on festivals is as well an ongoing and changing process. Today there is a specific interest in postmodern festivals, and the researchers take part as agents in festivals themselves.
