FESTIVALS: Sweden
8. May, 2009
The festival research in Sweden has been conducted in different areas with focus on different kinds of festivals. However, there are less explored areas as well, and the Swedish delegation will be researching some of them in FESTIVALS project.
Festival Research So Far
One of the areas researchers have focused so far is marketing, branding and sponsorship. Researchers have worked on how festivals are being promoted and what marketing strategies they use. Some other strands of research have investigated how festivals function both as businesses and as cultural events, how they shape local identities of communities as well as what impact festivals have on tourism. Much of the research has been conducted on festivals of musical content with a focus on youth (sub)culture(s) and youth identity.
Proposal for FESTIVALS Project
The Swedish delegation’s research on creativity and innovation in festivals will be twofold. First of all, the creativity and innovation of different actors involved in a festival will be explored. It will be investigated how visitors perceive and use festivals in creative ways as well as where creativity leads promoters and style conscious companies. Creativity of organizations (such as political parties, Amnesty, various movements) becoming involved in festivals in order to attract people will also be assessed.
Rockcity in Hultsfred will be analyzed as a case of creativity and innovation in a local place. Having started a festival in the 1980s, the promoter Rockparty later established a record company, a recording studio and even took over the management of the local amusement park. Therefore creativity and innovation has led to a centre of music, generating new ideas as well as economical and cultural growth.
